The Next Generation of ‘Pokémon’ Games Is Here

After months of anticipation in the wake of the release of Pokémon Legends Z-A, the Pokémon Company has lifted the lid on the next mainline games in the beloved gaming icon as part of its 30th birthday celebrations—and given us a first look at the land and new creatures we’re going to be falling in love with.

As part of today’s special Pokémon Presents livestream, the company announced two paired new Pokémon games, Winds and Waves: the official 10th generation of mainline Pokémon games since everything kicked off 30 years ago today in Japan with the release of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green.

Set in a brand new region—with multiple island landmasses in a massive sea, which seems set to be a large element of exploration this time—Winds and Waves will introduce a new generation of Pokemon alongside plenty of returning favorites from prior games. Players will be able to pick from three of some of the cutest new starter Pokémon around: Browt, the grass-type grumpy bird; Pombon, a fire-type pomeranian; and Gecqua, a water-type lizard with eyes almost the size of its head and a killer lash game.

The games will also introduce two special Pikachu, who will seem to be playing a significant role in the narrative, wearing appropriately tropical looks—a male Pikachu in sunglasses and a floral shirt and sunhat, and a female Pikachu sporting a cap and dress. It’s currently unknown if both Pikachus will appear in both games, or if they’ll be one of the traditional variant-exclusives that typically come with paired Pokémon titles. Similarly, the starting outfits for male and female player trainers will differ depending on which game you play.

Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.
